Robert A. Corby

Robert A. Corby “Bob”, age 79, of Wilmington, died peacefully surrounded by his family on January 3, 2017, at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford.

Bob was born in Winchester, MA on August 11, 1937; he was the dear son of the late Salvatore and Mary Corby. Bob was raised and educated in Winchester and a graduate of Winchester High School with the Class of 1955.

Bob enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on February 6, 1956 during the beginning of the Vietnam War; he was trained as an Auto Track Radar Specialist and was attached to the AC&W Squadron. Bob was honorably discharged from active duty on May 1, 1959 and went on to serve in the Air Force Reserves until February of 1962.

Bob married his “sweetheart” Janice Ryder on December 10, 1965; the couple shared many wonderful years together and raised three terrific sons. Bob loved his family with all his heart, he enjoyed the time he spent with his sons whether it was working on cars, coaching little league, or following his favorite Boston sports teams, they always had a good time. Bob was also a very proud grandfather to his 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Bob enjoyed family holidays, summer vacations, and the family trip to Disney World in Florida that they took a couple of years ago; these are memories that will be cherished.

Prior to retiring, Bob worked as a Senior Electronic Technician for MIT and traveled all over the country for work and to train others in his field. Bob loved to travel for business and on more than one occasion he could take the family along and make it a mini vacation. Bob enjoyed visiting Hawaii, New Mexico, California, and Texas just to name a few; he loved meeting and working with new people wherever he went.

Bob was known to be an avid golfer who loved to play and watch golf. Bob enjoyed trying out different golf courses around New England or taking a trip or two to Myrtle Beach to golf there; Bob just loved it.

Bob will be fondly remembered as a great guy whose love and devotion to his family and friends was evident in everything he did. Bob was very nice and friendly to everyone he met and he will be greatly missed.

Bob was the beloved husband of Janice M. (Ryder) Corby, devoted father of William J. Petersen Jr. & wife Renee of Wakefield, Steven F. Corby & wife Patricia of Wilmington and the late Christopher Corby. Loving grandfather of William J. Petersen III & wife Kelly, Samantha R. Petersen, Nicholas Petersen, Jennifer N. Corby, Katherine P. Corby and great-grandchildren Claire and Cameron. Dear son of the late Salvatore and Mary (Walker) Corby, brother of Carol Lamattina of Wakefield, John Faretra of Washington, Mark Melvin of Carver, Karen Barry of Yarmouthport, Lois Manfra of Winthrop, the late Frank Corby, Tom Williams and Evelyn Castaldo. Bob is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, January 6th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Patient Fund, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.

    We worked with Bob for 25 years at Lincoln lab. He was an excellent technician and his special sense of humor made him fun to work with. And we had a lot of laughs with him on the golf course too. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Janice and his whole family at this difficult time.
