Robert L. McHugh, Sr.

Robert L. McHugh, Sr., age 87, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2020, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill.

Robert was born on March 8, 1932, at the Choate Hospital in Woburn, MA; he was the beloved son of the late Peter and Beatrice McHugh. Robert was raised and educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1950. Following graduation, Robert, enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 19, 1950, during the Korean Conflict. Robert was part of the 3384th Tech Training Squadron and served overseas in the Aleutian Islands where he deciphered Morse Code. Upon his return to the States he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi where he was honorably discharged in June on 1954 and returned home to Wilmington.

Robert went on to continue his education at Boston College where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1957. He then took a position as a Cost Estimator for Raytheon in Waltham where he worked for more than 34 years; retiring in 1992.

Robert married his “sweetheart” Catherine Woods in 1973; the couple shared many wonderful years together raising their four sons before Catherine’s untimely passing in 1982. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed spending time in Plum Island with his family, hanging out and having “a few” with their large circle of friends, taking trips to Florida, following Boston Sports teams especially the Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Robert will be remembered as a quiet guy who loved his family and friends; he was a hard worker and a proud Veteran. Robert will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Robert was the beloved husband of the late Catherine A. (Woods) McHugh, devoted father of Kenny Liston & his partner Kim Monteforte of Haverhill, Salvi “Bill” Liston & his wife Susan of Wilmington, Robert McHugh, Jr. & his partner June Ferrante of Wilmington and Jimbo McHugh & his wife Cheryl of Cumming, GA. Loving “Grampy Q” of Joe, Billy, Jennifer, Kyle, Brady, Craig, Catherine and Vanessa. Dear son of the late Peter and Gertrude “Beatrice” McHugh, brother of Richard “Bozo” McHugh & his late wife Maureen of Wilmington, brother-in-law of Ed Woods & his wife Sandra of Reading. Robert is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews and their families.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, January 31st from 4:00-8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843.
