Robert W. Benson

Robert W. Benson, age 80, of Chelsea, formerly a long-time resident of Malden, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 9, 2012.
Bob was born on July 20, 1931, in Malden, MA, he was the cherished son of the late Carl and Ida (Prescott) Benson.  He was raised in the “Maplewood” section of Malden where he resided for over 50 years.  Bob was educated in Malden and a graduate of Malden High School.

He entered the U. S. Air Force on February 15, 1952, during the Korean War, Bob was a member of the 1100th Air Police Squadron and received several commendations for his service.  He was honorably discharged on February 14, 1956, returning home to Malden and his wife Marie and his family.

Bob was a hard worker, always providing the best for his family; he was a truck driver for many years for Teamsters Local #25 in Charlestown.

Following his retirement, Bob lived in Connecticut for several years where he a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He moved back to the area to be closer to his family settling in Wilmington and then moved to Chelsea seven years ago.

Bob will be fondly remembered for his work ethic and his devotion to his family, they meant everything to him and they will miss him dearly.

Bob was the beloved husband of the late Marie F. (Goyetche) Benson, devoted father of Ed Benson and his fiancé Tammy Stoey of Wilmington, Brenda Fitzgerald and her husband John of Windham, ME, and Donna D’Elia and her husband Gerry of Chelsea, loving grandfather of Russell Amirault of Lowell, Allison and Patrick Buckley of Manchester, NH, Victoria and Danielle D’Elia of Chelsea, Jaime, Casey, and Nicholas Benson of Wilmington, Alan and Kana Fitzgerald of Windham, ME, Wendy and Jay Lewis of New Gloucester, ME, as well as seven great-grandchildren, cherished son of the late Carl and Ida (Prescott) Benson, dear brother of the late Helen Davidson, Ida Palmer, Charlie Benson, and Evelyn Smith.  Bob is also survived by many nieces and nephews and father-in-law of the late Katy Benson.

Family & friends will gather for a graveside service on Saturday, June 16th at 11:00 a.m. in the Wildwood Cemetery, Wildwood Street, Wilmington.  In lieu of flowers donations in Robert’s memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA  01970.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington.
