Robert W. Bertwell

November 20th, 2021

Robert W. Bertwell, “Bob”, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on his 93rd birthday, November 19, 2021.

Bob was born on November 19, 1928, in Woburn, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Samuel L. and Florence E. (Rooney) Bertwell who raised and educated in his beloved hometown of Wilmington.

Bob patriotically enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 24, 1951. He proudly served for two years during the Korean War before being honorably discharged on January 23, 1953.

Upon his return from the war Bob married “the love of his life”, Pauline E. (Cail) on November 11, 1950. They chose to remain in Wilmington to raise their family in a home Bob had built himself from the ground up. The couple had two children, Nancy, and Bill who enjoyed countless loving memories together.

For years, Bob worked as a Carpenter at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital and completed many projects for family and friends. It was commonly said that he would give the shirt off his back for those whom he cared for as he was always willing to offer a helping hand. Bob also owned Jewel Manufacturing for over twenty years where he became a friendly face to both his customers and his employees throughout the community. Ever the perfectionist, Bob was able to utilize his many talents to establish a successful business manufacturing truck caps.

Antique cars were among his most passionate hobbies; he enjoyed restoring cars to their original condition and could frequently be found in his garage tinkering with his latest restoration. Age never slowed Bob down as he just recently completed one of his favorite cars, a 1930 Model A. He always looked forward to attending car shows so he could share his finished product with his friends, family, and community.

In his spare time, Bob loved to spend time outdoors tending to his garden with his wife Pauline. The two of them shared a love of flowers as well as the outdoors. Bob always took great pride in his yard.

Bob always joked that he will be remembered for his favorite “claim to fame” of sharing a birthday with Mickey Mouse, but his family and friends will surely remember him for always being there for anyone in need. A wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, he will always be loved and missed by all who knew him.

Bob was the devoted father of Nancy D. Clancy & her husband Jamie of Wilmington and Bill Bertwell & his wife Mary of Wilmington, loving “Grampa Beep” of Eric Frost & his wife Natalia, Adam Frost & his wife Don Andrea, Elysha Shaw & her husband Justin, and James Clancy IV, great-grandfather of Sophia, MacKinnon and Olivia, dear brother of Barbara Buck and Elaine Bertwell both of Wilmington. Bob was also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, November 23rd from 10:00 – 12:00 noon immediately followed by a Funeral Service with Military Honors at 12:00 noon.

It is with a heavy heart we say farewell to you Mr. Bertwell. Thank you for always being such a great Dad to Bill and us when we were too young to know better. I am smiling as I type this thinking of you and Pauline sitting out back after a hot summer afternoon of swimming in your pool watch BUD your dog float in the setting sun. I’ll imagine you there forever with Pauline by your side on that warm summer day. I can see you waving at us (or yelling at us) as you walk back into your basement before you built the garage to tinker on one car or another. Thank you for these memories. Sending love – John and Corinne
