Ruth R. Swenson

April 16th, 2019

Ruth R. Swenson, age 84, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away on April 10, 2019 at the Winchester Hospital.

Ruth was born at home on July 30, 1934 in Wilmington; she was the cherished daughter of the late Sven Otto G. and Gladys M. (Lowe) Swenson. Ruth was raised in Wilmington as part of a loving family including her brother, Al and sisters, Pamela and Christine.

Ruth was educated in the Wilmington School system. In her junior year of high school, she contracted polio, which forced her to continue her education at home. Ruth’s strength and determination helped her to overcome her illness and earn her high school diploma.

Ruth went to work for a few years, but due to her parents’ failing health, she made the choice to stay at home and care for them full-time. She was a wonderful homemaker; not only caring for her parents, but also keeping up with the house chores and tending to the garden. Ruth was a great hostess and took pride in helping her mother entertain the Lady’s Group at the Congregational Church. Ruth also belonged to the Rainbow Girls at the Masonic Lodge.

In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed researching the history of Wilmington and her Lowe and Perry family roots; she was considered the “family historian”. Ruth also took pride in maintaining her large doll collection.

Ruth was a strong woman, devoted daughter, loving sister and caring aunt. Ruth was the dear sister of Alfred Swenson & his late wife Nancy of Holden, Pamela Solomon & her husband Barry, and Christine Nelson & her late husband Keith all of Wilmington, loving aunt of Kevin Nelson, David Nelson all of Wilmington, Elisa Nelson-Smith and her husband R. Paul Smith of Vermont, Karen Habegger & her husband Tim of Connecticut, & Jim Swenson of Holden. Ruth is also survived by many loving great nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Funeral Services for Ruth will be private.

Memorial donations in Ruth’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the Wilmington Congregational Church in memory of her grandmother H. Ida Lowe and mother Gladys L. Swenson.
