Shirley A. (Temple) Gaffney

August 21st, 2013

Shirley A. (Temple) Gaffney, age 77, of Tewksbury, passed away on August 19, 2013 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Shirley was born on September 9, 1935 in Somerville, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth (Hillson) Temple.  As a young girl, Shirley moved with her family to Wilmington, where she was raised.

Shirley married her husband, the late Joseph J. Gaffney, Sr. in Wilmington and the couple moved to Stoneham for a few years before settling in Tewksbury in 1978.  The couple raised their three children, Joseph, Jr., Debra and David, who were their pride and joy.

Shirley loved to help people.  As a young girl, Shirley put aside her own personal interests to care for her mother, who was ill.  She learned that caring for people was her passion.  Shirley took part in helping to raise her two granddaughters, who lived next door.  She would check in on them before school every morning and if she wasn’t home after school, Shirley would make sure the girls had an afternoon snack waiting at the door.  Shirley loved to cook and feed her family and friends.  In her later years, she took great pride in caring for the elderly; cleaning their homes and helping them with errands.

Shirley was an avid sports fan; she especially loved the Red Sox.  She was also a great shopper and could be found at Market Basket in Tewksbury at 7:00 every morning.

Shirley will be remembered as a caring and compassionate person.  Her family was the most important part of her life, especially her grandchildren and she will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Gaffney, Sr., loving mother of Joseph J. Gaffney, Jr. of Methuen, Debra Andrews & her husband Richard of Palm Bay, FL, and David Gaffney of Tewksbury, “Grandma” to Richard Andrews, Jr. & his wife Colleen, Kevin Andrews & his wife Sarah, Alyssa Gaffney, April Gaffney, Melissa Gaffney and Miranda Gaffney, “Great Grandma” of Cristiano, Dominick and Carter, cherished daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth (Hillson) Temple, dear sister of Lillian LaCrosse of Danville, NH, Ruth Lembo of Ayer and the late Robert and Albert Temple.  Shirley is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, August 24th for Visiting Hours from 10:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Home Service at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th FL., Brookline, MA  02445.
