Shirley M. Hadfield, age 92, and long-time resident of Wilmington, MA., died peacefully Wednesday, March 27, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born in Calais, ME., November 1, 1926. Shirley was a 1944 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, Maine. Shirley married her husband John in 1950 and had a wonderful marriage for 66 years before John’s passing in 2016. She was a loving mother and homemaker. When her children were of school age, she started her professional career at Avco in Wilmington, Ma. She retired in 1987 as a Subcontract Administrator. Late in her working career, she took night classes at Middlesex Community College and earned her associate’s degree shortly after her retirement.

Shirley and her husband John, with neighborhood friends, began the Wilmington Dance Party and became the first presidents. They, along with many other Wilmington residents, enjoyed the dance party for many years. They played bridge every month with their Strout Ave. neighbors and also enjoyed many travel adventures with them. Never one to be idle, in her spare time, she was always working on one of her many crafts. To highlight a few, she was an accomplished seamstress and made all her daughters’ beautiful wedding and bridesmaid’s dresses. She also made beautiful stained-glass lamps and window ornaments that family and friends will always cherish.

Upon her retirement, Shirley was a very active volunteer member of the Friends of the Wilmington Library and the Wilmington Garden Club. Along with her other activities there, it was joy for her to provide them both with her beautiful handmade floral arrangements.

Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband John and beautiful granddaughter Elizabeth Hadfield. Shirley is survived by her four children, Penelope Roche & husband Michael of Orange, MA, Pamela McDade & husband Norman of Andover, MA, James Hadfield & wife Patricia of Glastonbury, CT, and Patricia Campbell & husband Doctor John of Enterprise, AL. She was the daughter of the late John and Mildred (Brown) Shipley and the last of 7 siblings. Shirley is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was always there for her family and friends. Her loving ways, sense of humor and wit will truly be missed by all. She will forever be in our hearts.
