Stephen L. Day

December 19th, 2021

Stephen L. Day, “Steve”, age 73, formerly of Saugus, MA & a long-time resident of Wilmington, went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 16, 2021.
Steve was the beloved husband of Sandra L. (Wheaton) Day. Sandra was loved, cherished and adored by Stephen for 53 blessed years of marriage.

Steve worked at GE Aircraft Engines in Lynn, MA for 35 years as a mechanical engineer. He pursued his bachelor’s degree from the University of Lowell in Bachelor’s of Science and Engineering Technology graduating Summa Cum Laude leading to his position as Senior Engineer of Advanced Methods and Equipment.

Stephen’s favorite pastime was devoting himself to his Savior, Jesus. He faithfully studied the Bible most every day using church history & learning Greek to bolster his study of the Word. Steve was well-known for the numerous hours spent writing letters & praying for his immediate & extended family, friends and the persecuted church touching the lives of many, whether they were ill, seeking advice or comfort or just sharing the Word. Steve’s love for God radiated through his life, right up to the end when he prayed with various nurses in the hospital. His last day was spent FaceTiming and on the phone with numerous family members gently reminding them to stay on the straight and narrow with Jesus as their guide & take a hard look at their life’s path so he can meet up with them in Heaven one day.

Steve was the devoted father of Jennifer Gaffney & her husband Peter of Salem, MA, Jessica Nichols & her husband Guy of Lowell, Rachel Simonelli & her husband Brian of Wilmington, and Stephen Day, II & his wife Amy of Billerica, proud grandfather of Michaela Gaffney Guzman, Arianna Gaffney, Shayne Gaffney, Matthew Nichols, Felicia Nichols, Anna Nichols, Kailey Nichols, Mirlande Nichols, Collin Hoffman, Kirsten Hoffman, Aislinn Simonelli, Audrey Day & Elijah Day, and Great Grandfather to Finn Gaffney, Grace Gaffney and soon-to-be Emilia Guzman, cherished son of the late Stanley W. and Anna A.(Swanson) Day, dear brother of Stanley W. Day, Jr & his late wife Jette of North Reading and Carol J. Boisvert & her husband Dennis of Wilmington. Steve is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family & Friends will gather for a Graveside Service in Wildwood Cemetery, 233 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA on Tuesday, December 21st at 2:00 p.m. Services were provided by Nichols Funeral Home, Wilmington, MA. There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date tbd.

Though I didn’t have the blessing and privilege of meeting Mr. Day, I did have a very special relationship with his namesake, Steve Day 11, when he and precious Amy attended our Newlywed Life Group my husband and I taught while they were in Florida. So many times Steve mentioned how his dad was his mentor and that he went to him for prayer and counsel. Oh what depth of love between father and son! What a beautiful legacy to carry on, living a life of glorifying God to the end. Latin: Post Tenebras Lux” After Darkness Light.

It is a time of mixed emotions: loss of a great friend and brother (it was an honor to share the same surname), and jubilation in the knowledge that Steve is home with our glorious and triumphant Lord. I am praying for Sandy and family to celebrate a life well lived and to take comfort in our Lord during this difficult time. I feel the loss now but know we will see Steve again soon. Well done, good and faithful servant!

  7. Theresa Gilman says:

Sandy, I can only imagine how it would be to lose your beloved of 53 years. We don’t grieve as the world grieves, but we do indeed grieve. You and Steve were some of the first people we knew at Calvary Chapel. I have wonderful memories from that home group at Bob and Paula’s house. Steve was always so kind and gentle. He is missed already. May the Father send angels to speak words of comfort to you, and the Holy Spirit to buoy your own spirit in this time of searing pain. It was not meant to be so, but let us look forward to the day death itself will die, in the consuming glory of the risen and victorious King Jesus, our blessed savior! Amen.
