Sullivan, Daniel

June 16th, 2011

Daniel Joseph Sullivan, “Dann”, age 59 of Tewksbury, formerly of Wilmington, died peacefully at home with his loving family at his side on Thursday, June 16, 2011, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dann came into this world on Mothers Day Weekend in 1952, he was born in Lowell on May 9, 1952, and was the cherished son of Alice F. (Rooney) and the late Andrew F. Sullivan of Wilmington. Dann grew up in Wilmington, he was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1970, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree at North Adams State College in 1974, and his Masters Degree at Leslie College.

Dann was a hard worker and very accomplished, at the time of his death, he was employed as the Project Facilities Manager at Textron Defense Systems in Wilmington, MA. Dann loved his job at Textron and the people he worked with, they were his extended family. He belonged to a group of co-workers that were dedicated and diligent in their efforts to raise money for in curing cancer, they participated in the Jimmy Fund Walk for many years. Dann’s last Jimmy Fund walk was last September, six weeks after surgery, he walked the last two miles because he strongly believed in their cause.

Dann was also very athletic, he was a great organizer and enjoyed all the softball games with the guys at the Textron Field. His softball team to him was like having another group of brothers and their relationships lasted far beyond the field.

Dann was the second oldest of ten siblings, he grew up in a large Irish Catholic Family, where he learned sharing, patience, caring, thoughtfulness, never getting too full of yourself, helping others, and most of all Love. That is what family is about and that was what Dann was about. Dann was a dedicated and loving husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and a true friend. He was always interested in what was going on with his family and friends, he took the time to listen and made the time to help out. Dann loved the family celebrations and holidays, he was always there to help organize and chip in, he was very proud of everyone’s accomplishments. Dann’s family always made him smile.

Dann was also very Patriotic and would jump at the chance to help out with any project to do with the Veterans. He had the utmost respect for our men and women currently serving in the Armed Forces and the ones that had served before them, they were his heroes. Dann was involved with the Veterans Project last year replacing the monuments in the Veterans Section of Wildwood Cemetery, he was there the day the new monuments were delivered and you could just see the pride written all over his face because he could help in some way. He was also a volunteer at Local Heroes.

In his spare time, Dann enjoyed traveling, Salisbury beach, cutting wood, and deep sea fishing. He loved to go to his children’s school and sporting events, coaching many teams and volunteering at school events, his dedication to his children was unwavering. Dann was a wonderful and loving husband, he and his wife Lorraine were there to support each other unconditionally, even in the face of adversity, they truly had a special bond.

Dann will be fondly remembered as a man who made a huge impression on the people he knew intimately or a stranger he just met, he was compassionate, thoughtful, and caring. He gave of himself time and time again, never expecting anything in return, always making things easier on those he cared about. Dann loved people and will be missed more than words can say.

Dann was the beloved husband of Lorraine (Joubert), devoted father of Lisa M. Sullivan of Tewksbury, Colin J. Sullivan & his wife Shannon of Billerica, and Loren D. Sullivan of Tewksbury, loving “Grandpa” of Aria Sullivan, dear brother of Andrew Sullivan & his wife Susan of Newton, NH, Steven Sullivan & his wife Judy, Dennis Sullivan & his wife Donna, Kathleen Campbell & her late husband Leo, Mary Ann Sullivan, Margaret McKenna, Maureen Parsons & her husband Wayne, Alice Batchelder, and Gerald Sullivan & his wife Nancy all of Wilmington, brother-in-law of Christina Robinson, Pastor Joubert & his wife Gina, Carmen Joubert, Antonia Ramos, Manuel Joubert all of Lowell, and Juliet (Joubert) Sylvia & her husband Dave of Peabody, Joaquin Melendez of Floriday, Lena Melendez of Puerto Rico and Marguerita Santiago of Holyoke, MA. Dann was also a wonderful uncle to countless nieces and nephews and a true friend to many, he is further survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Family and friends gathered for a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 21st, at St. Thomas of Villanova Church. Interment followed in the family lot at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Donations in Dann’s name may be made to Local Heroes Inc., P. O. Box 536, Wilmington, MA 01887 or to Tom Tam Medical Associates, 85 Essex St., Haverhill, MA 01832. Funeral Arrangements were under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington.

Well, I found out very quickly how loved and respected he was by all. Dann always called us his little brother and little sister from NY, our daugthers always called him Uncle Dann. 45. Zach Haeussner says:

I learned a lot from working with Dann, he was one of the hardest working and networked people I’ve ever been around, but man were there some distractions… It seemed like if he wasn’t attending an event to recognize a friend or family member he was busy planning one. If he wasn’t trying to find someone to say happy birthday to, thank you or i love you, they found him first. No matter how focused we’d have to get on the project, he never let anything stand in the way of God, Family and Country responsibilities, and in the end we’d somehow make it out alright.
He prioritized his life the way we all should, and it’s been said before but he’s finally reached the true paradise he spoke of. I imagine he’s in heaven bragging about his wife and kids, and telling stories to angels. We’ll miss him always.
