Melanie (Wynant) VanKeymeulen, age 101, of Wilmington, formerly of Medford, died peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2011, at Woodbriar of Wilmington following a lengthy illness.

Melanie was born on June 8, 1909 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, she was the dear daughter of the late Petrus and Julia (DeMeyer) Wynant. Melanie grew up in Belgium and was educated there.

She married her sweetheart Victor G. VanKeymeulen on May 7, 1932. Melanie and Victor soon began a family, they had three beautiful daughters who they cherished. Melanie and Victor wanted a better life for their daughters so they left their daughters with family and immigrated to the United States in 1949. Melanie and Victor settled in the Medford area and began to work, she as a seamstress and he as a tailor. Melanie and Victor work very hard and many long hours to build their life in America, within one year they sent for their daughters and again the family was happily united.

Melanie and Victor shared a wonderful life together for more than 30 years before his untimely death in February of 1963. Family was everything to Melanie, she thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she would often babysit and she was by far their favorite play mate, they adored her.

Melanie also loved to travel and she took many cruises with her family and friends over the years.

Melanie will be fondly remembered as a wonderful woman with a strong work ethic, she was kind, loving, and had a great devotion to her family. She will be greatly missed.

Melanie was the beloved wife of the late Victor G. VanKeymeulen, devoted mother of Jeannine G. Sorrenti & her husband Donald of Whitman, Rosette C. Logiudice & her husband Domenic of Peabody, and the late Maria J. Mauriello , mother-in-law of Frank Mauriello of Wilmington, loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson.

Family & friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave.(Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, March 5th at 8:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Parish, 600 Pleasant St., Malden, MA at 9:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the family lot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours at Nichols Funeral Home Friday, March 4th from 4-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations in Melanie’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.

    My condolences to the whole family, I have many fond memories of “Nieken” in her store. She was a fun & thoughtful person always. She sent cards & postcards to my son for a whole year when he was sick just cuz he wanted mail!

    “Nieken” will be greatly missed she is a wonderful woman and touched so many of our hearts at woodbriar. I loved spending everyday with her just to see her smile would make my day and you could never get enough of her. We love her very much.
