Victor G. Sawyer

November 6th, 2019

Victor George Sawyer, age 78, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on November 6, 2019.

Victor was born on July 9, 1941 in Malden, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Victor C. and Doris C. (Lyons) Sawyer.  Victor was raised in Billerica as the oldest of eleven siblings.  He graduated from Billerica High School with the Class of 1959.

Following graduation, Victor enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 24, 1962 in Boston, MA.  He attended basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ and went on to complete his specialized training at Camp Roberts, CA, Ft. Ord, CA and Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.  During his military career, he worked as a radio operator and an expert rifleman. Vic participated in the strike unit during Operation Desert Strike in the Mojave Desert; he was very proud of his two and a half tours in Vietnam.  On January 22, 1965, Vic was honorably transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves and returned home to his family.

Upon returning home, Vic went to Boston College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in science.  During college, he worked for Fitzgerald Motion Pictures, where he made educational videos for college students.  He also worked for his brother David doing construction, before he started his 37-year career with Polaroid in Waltham.  Vic started with Polaroid as a chemist.  Through his hard work and dedication, he was promoted to Manager of Chemical Operations.  He also was an instructor for the night school program that Polaroid offered to their employees.

Vic married Diane (Rossi) Sawyer on December 16, 1962.  They moved to Wilmington where they raised their children, Lisa, Linda, Laurie and Jimmy.

In his spare time, Vic was an avid fisherman.  He could be found fishing in Gloucester or Rockport, but his favorite place was the Deerfield River.  He also enjoyed taking camping trips and playing cards with his family.  He was a phenomenal “Rummy” player and still holds the family title.  Vic was a great mechanic and loved to spend time fixing anything with an engine.

Vic had many friends who he loved to visit with.  He enjoyed going to see the “guys” for his daily coffee.  He also made it a priority to visit the Veterans at the VA in Bedford to lend an ear and support for those Veterans in need.

Vic will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and “Grampa.”  He loved to spend time with his grandsons, Ryan and Colin.  He will be missed by his family and his friends.

Victor was the beloved husband of the late Diane (Rossi) Sawyer, devoted father of Victor “Jimmy” Sawyer & his wife Sarah of Wilmington, the late Lisa, Linda and Laurie Sawyer, loving “Grampa” of Ryan Daniel Sawyer and Colin James Sawyer. Victor was the cherished son of the late Victor Cecil Sawyer and Doris (Lyons) Sawyer and was oldest of eleven siblings.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Monday, November 11th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.  A Graveside Service with Military Honors will take place in Wildwood Cemetery, 233 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington on Tuesday, November 12th at 11:00 a.m.
