Virginia “Ginny” Bruce

December 26th, 2019

Virginia I. Bruce, “Ginny”, died peacefully at home December 17, 2019 in La Plata, MD; she was formerly a long-time resident of Billerica, MA.

Virginia grew up in Somerville, MA. She graduated from Somerville High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and played drums in the marching band. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls and was very active with swimming at the Somerville YMCA where she met her future husband Kenny.

The two married and built their home in Billerica, MA “out in the country back then” leaving the city behind. They raised their five children in the home they built and Virginia continued to live there for over 60 yrs.

Virginia loved children. She spent many years as a Girl Scout Leader and Camp Counselor. Many of the girls she mentored have kept in contact with her for decades.

Virginia was especially proud of going back to college in her 40’s to fulfill her dream of obtaining a teaching degree. Some of her happiest years were as a teacher at the Billerica Cooperative Kindergarten.

Virginia had a special love for nature. She enjoyed rocking on the porch bird watching in the sunshine. She looked forward to family trips to Rockport and seafood dinners every summer. Her greatest joys were sitting by the ocean and lighthouses.

She was our family’s lighthouse guiding us through life.

Ginny was the wife of the late Kenneth E. Bruce with whom she celebrated 31 years of marriage before his passing. She was pre-deceased by her parents Clayton and Irene Nickerson, her brother, Clayton “Bill” Nickerson, her sister Janet Mullett and her husband Bill, her Mother-in-law Ida Walters and her husband Norman and sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Thomas Casey.

She is Survived by her children, Linda Bieber and Charlie Rundlett, David Bruce and his wife Pamela, Robert Bruce and his wife Cindy, Bonnie Martin and her husband Roger and Donald Bruce and his wife Elizabeth. Her 12 Grandchildren Lisa, Jeff, Chris, Adam, Amy, Kerry, Colby, Johnathan, Brian, Alex, Cody and Katie. Her 12 Great Grandchildren Calvin, Casey, Bailee, Maisie, Rylee, Carson, Jaxon, Ella, Jayden, Max, Callie and Mia, along with many other special family members whom she loved dearly.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, January 2nd from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Ginny’s Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, January 3rd at 9:00 a.m. followed by Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.

Sending our deepest condolences to all of you. From being childhood friends with Bonnie and having the joy of having Ginny as a my wonderful Girl Scout Leader and mentor, to becoming Dave’s sister-in-law and part of my own family, to discovering that pharmacist from work who looked so familiar at a family birthday party (Roger) was married to Bonnie and getting to know and love the whole Bruce clan over the years. You are all very special and we know how much you loved and will miss your Mom. She was a fighter and a very special lady. We hope you find peace knowing she will never suffer another day and there has been a grand reunion with your Dad in heaven. Keep the good memories close to your hearts and know they will always be looking down upon you together from heaven. Sending love and hugs. xo

Just slightly after my mother, the most influential person in my life was Mrs. Virginia Bruce, my Girl Scout leader. To celebrate the 350th anniversary sailing of the Mayflower the Girl Scouts in Billerica sent me & other Scouts to England; & we lived with families for 2 weeks. Our Girl Scout Council also sent me to see Alan Shepherd’s Florida Apollo Moon Shot.”Are you listening?”she would ask us
teenagers. In college I became a Scout leader; she changed my life. Alison Roth

  10. Bonnie Marinaccio says:

    Dear Bonnie,

You are so blessed to have a large family to hold you up while you go through this traumatic loss…the loss of your mom. Even though she had been ill for some time, it never prepares us for the reality of it all. She would be very proud of her family. One can tell, just by meeting them for a few minutes, there is so much love in your family. You are very blessed. If you need a friend or just someone to listen, I am here for you. Matter of fact, all of us girls at the Winchester Cancer Center, are here for you. Take care. Love, Bonnie
