William H. Gronemeyer

September 17th, 2012

William H. Gronemeyer, age 65, of Wilmington, died peacefully at Winchester Hospital on September 17, 2012. He was born in Carroll, Iowa, on February 13, 1947, to the late Lyle J. and Ruth C. (Stickrod) Gronemeyer. He grew up in Iowa and was a graduate of Odebolt-Arthur High School. He joined the Army in 1966 and reported to Ft. Devens, MA for AIT before being sent to Vietnam and then Germany. After being discharged in 1970, he returned to Massachusetts. He later earned his Engineering Degree from Lowell University (now UMASS, Lowell).

In 1972 Bill and Ruth (Birkle) were married and settled in Wilmington where they raised three sons. Later two beautiful daughters-in-law and five precious grandchildren were added to the family.

In March Bill retired as Senior Engineer from Aspen Compressors of Marlborough. He was proud to have been involved in the development of several patents involving the production of Aerogel.

Bill had hoped to pursue his many interests and complete his many projects after retirement. He enjoyed motorcycles, hang gliders, gyrocopters, radio-controlled airplanes, sheet metal work, computers and electronics, ham radio, vintage aircraft, and the state of Maine. He belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Woburn Sportsman’s Club, the Quannapowit Radio Association, and Wilmington’s Emergency Management. Most of all he enjoyed being¬† Gumpy¬† to Jeanette, Joseph, Evan and Nora. His fifth grandchild, Emily Jane, was born only hours before her grandfather passed away. He waited for her safe arrival before he could leave us.

Besides his wife Ruth, Bill leaves behind his sons and daughters-in-law; Eric and Faith, Michael, Jacob and Mary Kay, and his five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Terry, Scott and Mark and his sister Sharon Rolf of Iowa. He was brother-in-law of Louise and Peter Anderson of Wilmington. Bill is also survived by many nephews, two nieces, and many friends.

    Dear Ruth and Family,
I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am about Bill’s passing.
Bill and I spent many years working together and became great friends as a result.
I will forever miss his youthful personality as he always had a smile or joke or story to tell to help make the days go by faster. He loved his cars, motorcycles, and gyro’s, but most of all his family. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Gronemyer family.
Bill was a great guy and he will truly be missed by all.

    With deepest sympathy
    Doug Olsen

  8. Kang P. Lee says:

    Dear Ruth and Family,

I had the pleasure of having Bill work for Aspen starting way back when aerogels was still a project within Aspen Systems, Inc. I have always enjoyed interacting with Bill for his warm and pleasant personality in addition to his creative mindset. I was glad to have him back to Aspen after a hiatus at Aspen Aerogels and ever since we worked on interesting design projects that we both loved to collaborate on. I bet he is still working on his unique Gronevane and other clever ideas in heaven. I will miss him very much.

    With my heartfelt condolences,

    Kang P. Lee
    President
    Aspen Systems, Inc.

  18. Todd Gronemeyer says:

    Ruth and Family,
My life long impression and rememberance of cousin Bill growing up,though 7yrs. younger than he, is that he was a person who marched to his own drummer. In that,I mean that while most of us were complacent and satisfied with the status quo, Bill always dreamed, schemed and invented new ways to make life easier and better.( I especially remember the riding lawn mower he conjured up consisting of a self-propelled mower, a coaster wagon and a play house chair! ). In ways, I guess I have always considered him my “Nutty Professor” cousin. I say that with the utmost respect.
It’s been almost 34 yrs. ago that I last saw Bill. I regret that deeply.
Ruth and family, he, as well as you all are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you all.
    My Love and condolences,
    Cousin John “Todd” Gronemeyer

  23. Louise and Peter says:

Bill was more like a force of nature. He was kind and good-hearted, intelligent and with a sense of humor that wouldn’t quit. Knowing him as well as we did the stories could go on for hours. The world was better place with him in it, and his legacy will live on through the future generations.
Ruthie and all the Gronemeyers know how important he was to us, and very much we will miss him.

  24. Kim Follenweider says:

I didn’t know Bill but I am best friends with his sister, Sharon. I know he will be missed by his friends and family. From the post that I have read and knowing his parents and his sister, I’m sorry I never got to meet him or remember him from school in Odebolt. Bill sounds like a wonderful, talented and loving man. May your family find peace, comfort and courage in the days ahead. God Bless. Kim

  25. Ed Dokus says:

    Dear Ruth and family.
I am both saddened and surprised to hear of Bill’s passing. I have known him many years and shared many Ideas and thoughts with him regarding the many fields of interest we both shared. He was a man after my own heart. It’s somehow comforting to know that his departure was peaceful and quiet, knowing the many struggles he had to face in his lifetime.. Indeed. he was a valiant warrior. A fine example and inspiration to all who knew him. Please accept my heart felt sympathies.

  27. Cheryl Boney Soelberg says:

I graduated with Bill from the Odebolt-Arthur class of 1965. Although he was not in my classes, I always thought he seemed to be an easy-going, smart guy. My sympathies to all of you.

  28. Cheryl Sellstrom Moe says:

I was also a classmate of Bill… all the way from kindergarten to graduation. He did provide entertainment for us at times. I think he also had some of the teachers wondering what to do with him as he had them wondering what was going on. He was definitely his own person. Just before our last class reunion I called him to encourage him to come, but he said he wasn’t able to. I was hoping that we would see him at our 50th reunion. My sympathy to the entire family. Hold on to the memories.
