William J. “Bill” Flaherty

November 25th, 2021

William J. Flaherty, “Bill”, age 93, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away following a brief illness on November 22, 2021.

Bill was born on March 4, 1928, in Mainistir, Galway, Ireland; he was the son of the late Patrick and Delia (Ganly) Flaherty. Bill was raised and educated in Ireland; at nineteen years old, he decided to move to the United States. In 1949, with just twenty-five dollars in his pocket, Bill immigrated to the United States.

Bill met “the love of his life” Nora (Howard) Flaherty at an Irish Dance in Roxbury. They “hit it off” and began dating. In 1957, Bill and Nora were married and started their new life together. They lived in the city for a few years before settling in Wilmington in 1965, where they raised their two loving daughters, Ann, and Linda. Bill and his family spent over fifty-five years in the same neighborhood; they made many fond memories with their neighbors and friends.

Bill worked for the Town of Wilmington for over twenty-five years in the Department of Public Works. He made many friendships with his co-workers and enjoyed being able to work in his town. After several years of hard work, Bill retired.

Bill remained active his whole life; he was always out in his yard “puttering” around. He had a daily ritual of reading three daily papers with his special “Papa face”. Bill thought it was important to keep up with current events and he liked to keep his family updated as well.
Bill will be remembered for his love of his family; he was a loving husband, father, and Papa. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Bill was the beloved husband of Nora (Howard) Flaherty, devoted father of Ann Stockton & her husband Robert of Tewksbury and Linda Caruso of Gardner, loving “Papa” of Kimberly, Caitlin, Sean, and Matthew, “Great-Papa” of Adeline, dear brother of Michael O’Flaherty & his wife Sally of Weymouth, the late Arthur, Thomas, Coleman, Gerard, Francis, Marion, Margaret, and Lily. Bill is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington on Tuesday, November 30th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
