Zachary R. Mayo

August 23rd, 2017

Zachary R. Mayo, “Zack”, age 29, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2017.

Zack was born on January 9, 1988, in Boston, MA. He was the cherished son of Bob and Deb Mayo. Zack along with his brothers Joe and Josh were raised in a very loving and tight-knit family. Zack was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 2006. Zack was known to be quite an athlete growing up, especially in Football and Basketball. He was a force to be reckoned with for the Wilmington Wildcat High School Football team, where Zack was captain of the Wildcats during his senior year and was selected by the Lowell Sun Newspaper to their All-Star Football Team.

Zack went on to attend college following High School but his passion was to serve his country and on January 7, 2009 he enlisted in the United States Navy. Zack was a Navy Corpsman and Combat Veteran with the Marine Corps. In January of 2012, Zack was deployed overseas to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he was assigned to fight in Helmand Province, one of the most dangerous posts in Afghanistan. Zack received many commendations for his bravery including the Combat Action Ribbon, First Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon. He was discharged in 2013 and returned home to his family.

Zack enjoyed going to the movies and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Patriots. He was thrilled when surprised and honored by Coach Belichick at a veteran’s gala in 2015.

Zack will be fondly remembered for his love of family. Zack enjoyed the holidays, vacations on Cape Cod, being with his brothers and was very proud of becoming a Godfather to his nephew Benjamin. Zack was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, who will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.

Zack was the beloved son of Robert M. and Deborah A. (Iovine) Mayo of Wilmington, dear brother of Joseph Mayo & his wife Diana of Windham, ME and Joshua Mayo & his fiancé Arianna Kaplan of Medford, loving uncle and Godfather of Benjamin Edward Mayo, and grandson of Florence Iovine of Medford. Zachary is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

At the family’s request, all Funeral Services for Zack will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations in Zachary’s memory may be made to Save A Warrior, Malibu CA (saveawarrior.org). Zack was a graduate of the program.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington.

    The Mayo Family-

My heart broke this morning when I learned about Zack’s passing. I only have the fondest and most fun memories of growing up with Zack and spending most weekends hanging out at your home. He was truly an amazing person, friendly to everyone he came across. No family should have to go through what you are. I am praying for strength for all of you during this time.

To the Mayo Family & Freinds -

I just learned that Zach passed away unexpectedly last Friday. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. I knew Zach only briefly while in Malibu, California last year with Save a Warrior. I served in the Marine Corps for eight years and served a tour in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. I didn’t know Zach well but well enough to know that he loved his brothers, his family and his country. My heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with you and yours. God bless you all.

    Mayo Family…

My heartfelt condolences. I remember meeting Zack in person on April 3, 2016 and spending the next week with him while attending Save A Warrior. He was an absolute pleasure to serve and without a doubt helped me become a better man. I grew up in Boston as well, so we were not short of something to talk about – especially when it came to the Pats.

Much love to all of you – from all of us at SAW.

    To the Mayo family.

I awoke this morning to the news of Doc Mayo’s passing. I can’t imagine the pain that you are going through but know that all of us Marines and Corpsmen of 1/8 are feeling his loss as well. Doc Mayo was a great man with a kind heart and was the kind of man you would want by your side in trying times. Doc Mayo will be sorely missed and will not be forgotten. Semper Fidelis.

  5. Michael Ponn says:

Zach was a great man who is well liked and loved by everybody he come in contact with. Zach wasn’t only a person whom I serve/deployed with; he was apart of the greatest brotherhood and one that I’m proud to call brother. I’ll never forget the 03MD, which he exceled at while serving with 1/8. Until Valhalla my brother.

If any of the Mayo’s family need anything, we are all here for you.

  6. Landon Loe says:

I can’t begin to understand the pain the family must be going through, but I want you to know that Zach made a positive impact on every life he encountered. Mine included. I’ve said it numerous times, but Zach was one of the few people who made me feel welcomed when I came to our unit. He was the friendliest guy you can find anywhere, and he was gracious enough to keep me laughing in a real low point of my life. Serving with him in Afghanistan was an honor. Thank you for giving us the remarkable man that we all knew as Doc.

  9. Chris Aguirre says:

Zach ‘Doc’ Mayo was an amazing Man to be around. I had the honor of serving with this man during the work up into the deployment and back. No matter where we’re at or what we doing, he always had a smile and making sure we all were laughing. We all looked out for one another. He will be truly missed. My thoughts, prayers all go up for his family, friends and loved ones. He was part of and always will be part of 1/8. If the family needs anything please do not hesitate to ask.

    Mayo Family

My heart goes out to you. I met Zack as I went through Save a Warrior with him and we immediately connected. Right off the bat we were joking around and constantly dropping lines from movies.

Zack’s sense of humor was only outmatched by the size of his heart, yes he could joke around with the best of them, but it was also very apparent how much he cared about everyone around him. True to his nature as a Corpsman, Doc made sure everyone around him was doing ok.

It’s not often that you meet someone with as big a heart as Zack’s. He was there for me in my time of need and was able to make me smile in moments that I just wanted to cry. He will always live on, fondly, in my memory.

    With Love,
    Jake Wehr

    Zach & Mayo Family,

My fellow brother in arms, far too early for you to go and so much left to do. You were the one who came to see me when I was at 78G in Bedford VA and you will never know how much that meant to me. I know your smiling face brought great joy to me as well to all the people who had the privaledge of knowing you. Not only has the town of Wilmington taken a big hit but also the Veteran community of Wilmington. The last time I saw you was outside of Lou’s office as we talked about our commen problems as a result of Combat PTSD. You were one of Lou’s “Kids” and that veteran family will not be the same without youYou will be held in my heart till we meet again in Valhalla..I Love you brother. To the Mayo family and friends my deepest condolences for your loss.. you raised an amazing man who grew to be a defender of this country and his fellow service members lives. Thank you for giving me the chance to meet such an amazing person who I can truly call my brother. Thoughts and prayers,
