June 26th, 2021

Alvan R. Lurvey, age 94, of Francestown, NH, formerly of Wilmington, MA and Windham, NH, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 25, 2021.

Alvan was born on September 13, 1926, in Lynn, MA; he was the dear son of the late Arthur and Grace (Perkins) Lurvey. Alvan was raised on Commercial Street in Lynn, MA. He attended the Lynn Public School Systems before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II.

Alvan’s active duty began on September 17, 1943, where he served in the Atlantic Ocean before heading to the Pacific and South Pacific. Alvan was a Seaman First Class and part of the plank crew of the U. S. S . Aucilla during her maiden voyage. The ship which was a sturdy oiler brought vitally needed fuel into Iwo Jima and Okinawa and chalked up its 100000th mile of two-ocean operations in 16 months. In addition to Iwo Jima and Okinawa, she also transported fuel and lubricating oil, aviation gasoline, ammunition and even belly tanks for the navy fighter planes into the waters of the Leyte Gulf, Surigao Straits and the China Sea. Before returning to the Pacific, the U. S. S. Aucialla, along with her crew supplied ships in the Normandy Invasion as well. Alvan received several commendations for his fine service including the American Campaign Medal, European African Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 5 stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 star and the World War II Victory Medal. Alvan was honorably discharged on January 22, 1946 and returned home to his family; he was truly part of the “Greatest Generation”.

Upon his return from active duty, Alvan went on to continue his education at New England College of Art where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts.

Alvan was known to be an amazing artist his entire life; early on he developed this natural talent and made it a career. Alvan went to work at the Raytheon Company as a commercial artist; a job he loved for over 30 years. Alvan’s creative mind, artistic ability and unwavering work ethic were all attributes that made him very successful throughout the years, not to mention his outgoing personality which made him a favorite person among his co-workers.

On April 18, 1948, Alvan married “his sweetheart” Geraldine Downey; the couple moved to Framingham, MA, where they lived for many years before moving to Wilmington, MA, in 1966. Alvan and Geraldine raised three beautiful children and were proud grandparents and great-grandparents. Alvan loved his family unconditionally and looked forward to the many special times they spent together.

While residing in Framingham, Alvan was a Mason at the Alpha Masonic Lodge and was very active in the community.

Following his retirement from Raytheon, Alvan and Gerry built their “dream home” on their land in Francestown, NH; this was “heaven on earth” for them and they enjoyed sharing it with family and friends. Alvan loved working with his hands whether it was renovating his homes, building something new or creating beautiful gardens; his unending talents made everything beautiful.

As years passed, Alvan and Geraldine relocated to Windham, NH, to be closer to their family. The couple lived in Windham for nearly 13 years where they made many friends and spent lots of time with their children and grandchildren.

In his spare time, Alvan, enjoyed painting, he could replicate some of the most famous artists or create his own landscapes; whatever he put his mind to he could do. Alvan’s work was that of a “true artist” but he remained humble and never wanted any recognition for his work.

Alvan will be fondly remembered as a “social guy” who was very interesting to listen to; he had an endearing personality and made friends wherever he went. He was always out and about helping others; a great neighbor and friend to many. Alvan loved his family with all his heart and he will forever be missed by all who knew him.

Alvan was the beloved husband of 71 years to the late Geraldine V. (Downey) Lurvey, devoted father of James Lurvey & his partner Janice Gilbert of Florida, Linda Lurvey of Bedford, NH and Bob Lurvey & his wife Deb of North Andover, MA.
