comeauellen2Ellen L. Comeau, age 94, of Wilmington and Vero Beach, FL, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2009, at her home following a brief illness, with her niece Carol at her side.

Ellen was born on June 20, 1915, in the Forest Hills area of Boston, she was the dear daughter of the late Lawrence & Louise (Gilbrook) Comeau. The family moved to Chelsea in 1916 where she grew up and remained for 73 years. She was a graduate of Chelsea High and worked for 53 years at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea until her retirement in 1991 at the age of 73. Ellen was very active for over 50 years in the Girl Scouts.

After retiring she went to Vero Beach, Florida with her niece Carol and nephew Dan Benzing. Ellen was very active at the Sunshine Travel Resort until five years ago when her health was declining. She could be seen serving orange juice at the pancake breakfasts and serving at different dinners that were held, she enjoyed going to bingo, swimming in the pool, and being involved in the many activities that took place there. After a fall and a stroke, Ellen had to slow down, but she continued going to Florida in the winter right up to this past year. Ellen will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family and the many friends she made throughout her life and all who knew her at the resort in Florida for the past 20 years. Ellen was a former employee at the Chelsea Soldier’s Home for over 53 years.

She was the special aunt to Carol Benzing, whom she raised along with her mother Louise since Carol was three years old. Ellen became a resident of Wilmington years ago and she was surrounded by many wonderful neighbors.

Ellen was the dear sister of the late Lawrence Comeau of Tewksbury, beloved aunt of Carol Benzing and her late husband Dan of Wilmington and Florida and Elaine and the late Lawrence Comeau of Wilmington, great-aunt of Daniel Benzing, James Benzing, and Edward Benzing& his wife Stacey, Luann Sullivan, and David Comeau & his wife Deborah, great-great-aunt of Tyler, Brandan, & Justin Benzing, Gabriel DaSilva, Ryan Sullivan and Daniel & Victoria Comeau, Ellen is also survived by many dear friends in Massachusetts and Florida.

Family & friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, September 12th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours Friday, September 11th from 4-8 p.m.
