Frank J. Killilea, Jr.

Frank J. Killilea, Jr., age 81, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away at the Winchester Hospital on November 20, 2019.

Frank was born on October 5, 1938 in Cambridge, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Col. Frank J. and Isabel V. (Sirois) Killilea. Frank was raised in Andover and attended Phillips Academy, graduating with the Class of 1956. Following graduation, Frank earned his Bachelors of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1960, and a few years later he earned his Bachelor’s of Science from the Thayer School of Engineering.

Frank married his wife, Katherine (Knight) Killilea on June 21, 1969; the couple just celebrated their 50th anniversary over the summer. Frank and Kathy lived in Somerville for a few short years, before moving to Wilmington in 1970, where they raised their three children, Susan, Steven and Thomas. Frank was very involved in coaching the kid’s sports, especially baseball, soccer and softball.

Frank became a registered professional engineer specializing in environmental engineering, and he worked with Metcalf & Eddy for more than 30 years. He then finished a distinguished career in engineering with the City of Beverly, serving as the Director of Engineering and Salem-Beverly Water Supply Board member for more than 11 years. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), New England Water Works Association, and was a Life Member of the Boston Society of Engineers.

In his spare time, Frank enjoyed tending to the vegetable garden and he really loved to watch his own tomatoes and cucumbers grow. He took great pride in his garden and felt a sense of pride when he saw success. Frank always had a home project underway; he was very handy and could fix anything. Frank also looked forward to testing out all the new tech gadgets that were invented.

Frank was a man of great faith; he was a parishioner of St. Thomas of Villanova Church for many years and served as a lector for the church.

Frank will be remembered for his love of family; he loved all the family gatherings and visits from the grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Frank was the beloved husband of 50 years of Katherine (Knight) Killilea, devoted father of Susan Killilea Coburn & her husband Edward of West Roxbury, Steven F. Killilea & his wife Kim of Fairfield, CT and Thomas U. Killilea & his wife Jennifer O’Neill of Andover, loving “Grandpa” of Abby, Norah, Garen, Colin and Isabel, cherished son of the late Col. Frank J. and Isabel V. (Sirois) Killilea, dear brother of John Killilea & his late wife Aida of Holland, MI, Peter Killilea & his wife Kathleen of North Andover and Alfred Killilea & his wife Mary Ann of South Kingston, RI. Frank is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave, (Rte. 62) Wilmington on Tuesday, November 26th at 9:00 a.m. immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, November 25th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
