Alice Sullivan Obituary

Alice F. Sullivan (Rooney), age 93, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on March 8, 2024.

Alice was born on August 7, 1930, in Cambridge, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Patrick and Annie (Patterson) Rooney and one of seven siblings.  In 1939, her family moved to Wilmington, MA, settling on Cunningham Street before moving to Jones Ave. where she called home for more than 80 years.  Alice attended Wilmington public schools and was a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1947.

Alice married Andrew Sullivan in October of 1949; together they raised their family of 10 children which kept Alice very busy and always on her toes.  There was a constant stream of family and friends at Jones Ave. where they celebrated many holidays, graduations, special occasions, and cookouts with extended family (the Stygles and Sinopoli's) and friends.  Alice attended countless school and sporting events for her children and grandchildren as she welcomed each of her 31 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Alice looked forward to the yearly Easter Egg Hunt and the annual "Nana's" Christmas Party; where she would play the piano and get the little ones singing and dancing.

While Alice's family was always her priority, she loved to share her time and talents to help others.  Alice enjoyed volunteering at several area nursing homes where she would play the piano and get the patients involved in a weekly "sing along" of the old tunes.  She loved to help out each week at AIM (Access is Mandatory) whether it was baking a special dessert, setting up the hall, serving lunch, or just visiting with the members and sharing conversation.

Alice was a woman of great faith; she loved God, daily Mass, and praying the Rosary.  She was an active communicant at St. Dorothy's Church for many years where she was involved in countless Christmas Bazaars, penny sales, Ladies Sodality events, and she found joy in bringing weekly Communion to patients at the Pines in Tewksbury.

Alice worked hard throughout her life and was always willing to learn.  She attended classes at Wheelock College and UNH to study early childhood development; this led to her involvement as a social worker for the Head Start Program in Wilmington.  Alice went on to take a position as a Teacher's Aide for the Wilmington Public School Department; spending her time working with the children at the Glen Road School and North Intermediate School for many years.

In her spare time, Alice enjoyed weekly ceramics classes with her girlfriends, she baked and decorated many beautiful wedding cakes, birthday cakes or special occasion cakes for family and friends along with her friend Irene Brennan, she crocheted or knitted afghan's and baby blankets for her children and grandchildren, and then relaxed by going for her walks with her Rosary beads in hand.  Alice was an avid reader and loved watching the game show network to challenge her knowledge.  She looked forward to her trips to California to visit her sister Margaret; the two would head across the desert to Las Vegas and Sam's Town just to try their luck.

Alice was a beautiful lady inside and out; she handled her life with patience and grace.  Alice created a beautiful close-knit family or as she would refer to them as her "Family Forest", she beamed with pride as she spoke of their accomplishments.  Alice's legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who are forever grateful to have had such a wonderful Matriarch.

Alice was the beloved wife of the late Andrew F. Sullivan, devoted mother of Andrew Sullivan & wife Susan of Newton, NH, the late Daniel Sullivan & wife Lorraine of Tewksbury, Steven Sullivan & wife Judy, Dennis Sullivan & wife Donna, Kathleen Campbell & her late husband Leo, Mary Ann Sullivan, Margaret McKenna, Maureen Parsons & husband Wayne, Alice Sullivan, and Gerald Sullivan all of Wilmington.  Loving Nana of Amy Sullivan, Melanie Omojola, the late Stacey Sullivan, Stephanie Victor, Lisa Sullivan, Colin Sullivan, Loren Sullivan, Shawn Sullivan, Megan Sullivan, Katie Sullivan, Molly Sullivan, Jaclyn Costello, Dennis Sullivan, Nikki Melillo, Jamie Campbell, Colleen Kelly, Andrew Campbell, Alyse Warren, Kelly Evans, Bill Cavanaugh, Jillian Cavanaugh, Joseph Cavanaugh, Kevin Cavanaugh, Ryan Parsons, Erica Parsons, John Parsons, Christopher Mack, Jonathan Mack, Shayna Sullivan, Jocelyn Sullivan, Andrew Sullivan, as well as her many great-grandchildren who all adored her. Dear sister of May Pilcher, Gerald Rooney, the late Margaret Hanson, Martha Gray, Daniel Rooney and Patricia Hill.  Alice is also survived by large extended family of grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Thursday, March 14th from 2:00-8:00 p.m.  A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, March 15th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA, (please go directly to church) followed by interment in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
