Backman, Carl “Bucky”

Carl A. (Bucky) Backman Sr., 96, of Pinehurst, NC, died Tuesday March 25, 2008.

He was born in Woburn, MA and lived in Wilmington for many years, where he was active in Little League, Youth Hockey and the Wilmington Skating Club. He and his wife Hazel were honored by the presentation of the Wilmington “Good Guy” award for their many contributions to the community. Upon retirement to Jensen Beach, FL, he pursued his love of sports by joining the Martin County Golf and Country Club.

Bucky was preceded in death by his wife Hazel, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage, and son Leon. He is survived by son Carl Backman, Jr. and wife Elinor of Middletown, CT, daughter Janet Waugh and husband John of Pinehurst, NC, son Knute Backman and wife Rachel of Evanston, WY, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Thursday, May 8th, 11:00 a.m. at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Memorial donations in Carl's name may be made to the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA 01887.
