Barbara Heckbert Obituary

Barbara E. Heckbert (Russell), age 94, of Tewksbury, MA, formerly a resident of Medford for over 90 years, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024.

Barbara was born on September 23, 1929, in Medford, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Leonard and Marion (Ash) Russell and the last of fourteen siblings who were raised and educated in Medford.

Barbara was all about family; she married the "love of her life" William Heckbert on October 10, 1947, and the couple bought their home in Medford to stay close to family.  Barbara and Bill raised three wonderful children; she taught them the same strong family values that she was raised by and showered them with unconditional love.

Barbara and Bill shared over 56 years of marriage together and made countless memories with family and friends before his passing in February of 2004.  Barbara looked forward to family vacations at Camp Wulamat on Newfound Lake in Bristol, New Hampshire, where all were welcome.

Barbara treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; she attended many school events, sporting events, and special family celebrations throughout the years.  Barbara beamed with pride as she spoke of her family whom she adored.  Barbara also looked forward to the annual Russell Family Christmas party where she could socialize with her siblings, nieces, nephews, and their families.

Barbara worked for the Medford Savings Bank for many years; she was a manager in the Safe Deposit Box room.  Barbara had an endearing personality; great customer service skills and she was trustworthy; all attributes that made her a great employee.  Barbara retired following nearly 20 years at the bank where she also made many long-time friends with her co-workers.

In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed doing puzzles, needlepoint, and she was an avid reader.  Barbara loved to travel all over with her husband Bill, her family and her friends; no matter where they went a great time was had by all.  Barbara was also very close to her sisters, and they enjoyed spending time together every chance they got.

Barbara will be remembered as a woman of great faith; she lived her life with kindness and compassion towards everyone she met.  Barbara loved her family and friends with all her heart, and she will forever be missed.

Barbara was the beloved wife of the late William M. Heckbert, Sr., devoted mother of Pamela M. DeMattia of Wilmington, Valerie A. Donadio and her husband Gabriel of Tewksbury, and the late William M. Heckbert, Jr.  Barbara was also special to her late daughters-in-law Patricia and Mary Heckbert. She was the loving grandmother of Ernest DeMattia and Fiancé Valerie, Deanna and the late Greg Wright, Stephanie and Ralph Francis, Cheryl and Keeley Murphy, Fred Parziale, Olivia and Erik Peterson, and great-grandchildren Cheyanne and husband Casey, Nicholas, Madison, Benjamin, Lillia, Reverie, Nathaniel "Nathan", Alexander, Lucy, Bennett, and Mason.  Dear sister of the late Robert, Bruce, Amy, Shirley, Allan, Richard, Albert, Alma, Audrey, Dottie, Lenny, Doug, and Joyce.  Barbara is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, February 17th at 9:30 a.m. at the gates of Oak Grove Cemetery, 230 Playstead Road, Medford, MA, followed by a Graveside Service at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3 Speen St., Framingham, MA  01701.
