William F. “Bill” Barrett, age 72, of Wilmington, died Friday, February 13, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
Born on June 30, 1936, in Boston, MA, he was the dear son of the late David & Margaret (Barry) Barrett. Bill grew up in Somerville, MA and was educated there. Following High School, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. Bill was honorably discharged from his service in November of 1962. Prior to retirement in the late 1990’s, Bill worked for the First National Store Chain and then was employed as a Pipe Coverer for the Asbestos Workers Union, Local #6, in Boston for over 30 years.
Bill married Dorothy Fennessey on May 25, 1963 and they moved to Wilmington. Bill and Dot raised their four children there. Bill became quite active in Wilmington Youth Hockey, not only as a coach but as a Past President and member of the board for many years. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed watching sports and spending time with his grandchildren, they were his pride and joy. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted family man with a great sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy (Fennessey) Barrett, he was the devoted father of Barbara A. Patch & her husband Tom of North Reading, William F. Barrett, Jr. & his wife Mary of Methuen, Jay Barrett & his wife JoAnne of Wilmington, and Kevin M. Barrett of Wakefield, cherished grandfather of Kasey, Tommy, Ryan, Liam, Shannon, Jonathan, & Samantha, dear brother of Robert Barrett of Manchester, NH, John Barrett of Everett, Ginger Quinn of Melrose, and the late David, James, Barbara, & Judith Barrett, Bill is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Family & friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, February 17th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 12:00 noon. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours Monday, February 16th from 4-8 p.m.
