Joseph V. Carmody, who for the past 60 years resided on Beaver Avenue in Lynnfield, died August 11, 2007 after a long battle with cancer, at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was 81 years old.
Born in Arlington on August 31, 1925, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Sweeney) Carmody. Mr. Carmody was a graduate of Arlington High School, class of 1943. After graduation from High School he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. Upon discharge from the service, he began his career with HP Hood & Son in Newburyport where he met his bride to be. Later in life, he worked for over 20 years as the produce manager for Worthens' Food Mart in Lynnfield Center. After the Worthens' closed the store, he finished his working career with Rhodes & Son at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea.
Joseph was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Lynnfield. He had a life long passion for greyhounds which included obtaining a kennel license to raise them which he did for many years in his backyard in Lynnfield.
Mr. Carmody is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Evelyn R. (Brooks) Carmody. Devoted father of Joseph V. Carmody II & his wife Eileen of Amesbury, Janis E. Carmody of Lynnfield, Cheryl A. Deveau & her husband Michael of Brush Prairie Washington, and J. Michael Carmody & his wife Susan of Wilmington. Loving grandfather of Joseph V. III, Christopher J., Mark A. and Melissa E. Great grandfather of Amber, Taylor and Lillie. Dear brother of Alice Dorrington of Arlington.
A Funeral Service was held at St. Maria Goretti, Lynnfield on August 15th. Interment was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield.
