Charles Gill Obituary

Charles M. Gill, "Charlie", age 76, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024, at the Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington.

Charlie was born on November 23, 1947, in Fall River, MA; he was the dear son of the late Irene Gill and brother of the late Penny Fiejo.  Charlie was raised and educated in Fall River.  Following High School, he enlisted in the United States Marines on February 2, 1965.  Charlie served overseas in Vietnam where he earned several commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart Medal for his bravery and was promoted to the rank of Corporal.  Charlie was honorably discharged in January of 1969 and went on to serve in the Marine Corps. Reserves until January of 1971.

When Charlie returned home, he went on to continue his education at the Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown and went to work for the Jordan Marsh Company in Quincy.  Charlie worked hard throughout his life; he was a shipper/receiver at Jordan Marsh's warehouse for over 25 years; he was always helping others out at work and made many great friends with his co-workers.

Charlie married "his girl" Jeanne Birkenbach on September 17, 1989; the couple bought their home in Wilmington where they settled nicely into a great neighborhood.  Charlie and Jeanne loved to travel throughout New England mostly heading North to various towns in New Hampshire and Maine; they enjoyed the driving up the coast, going to the beach, and travelling through the mountains.  Charlie and Jeanne looked forward to celebrating their yearly wedding anniversary in Vermont.

In his spare time, Charlie looked forward to going fishing, he loved the outdoors, he was an avid gardener, and enjoyed walking his dog Ginger.  Charlie would often relax at home where he loved to watch old movies and westerns.

Charlie will be remembered as a quiet guy who loved his family.  He was a great neighbor and a good friend to many.  Charlie will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.

Charlie was the beloved husband of Jeanne M. (Birkenbach) Gill of Wilmington, father of Tabetha L. Douglas and her husband Daniel, grandfather of Chloe and Kasey Douglas, he was the special uncle of Robin and Paul Mathieu, Donna and Mark Mathieu, David Malek and the late Wendy Malek.  Charlie is further survived by his faithful companion; his dog Ginger as well as is large extended family of great nieces, great nephews, in-laws in California, cousins, and friends.
