Christine Baptiste Obituary

Christine Ann (Weiss) Baptiste, “Chris”, age 83, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024.

Chris was born on June 11, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (McGrath) Weiss.  Chris was raised and educated in Shalor Township, PA with her only brother, Joseph.

Following graduation, Chris met her first husband, Carl Hamilton, and they were married in 1960.  Carl served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, stationed in Germany, where the couple learned they were expecting their first son.  Sadly, Carl was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and passed away at a young age.  With strength and determination, Chris welcomed their son Carl six months later.

Chris found love again when she met Julio Baptiste, who had also suffered a difficult loss, and they bonded over their love for ballroom dancing.  Over the next several months, Chris and Julio bonded over their past lives and found comfort with each other.  They were married on January 1, 1964, and settled in Wilmington, where they lived for over sixty years.  Julio adopted Carl and they welcomed three more children: Michelle, Glenn, and Judy.  The children had a wonderful childhood as part of the "Hathaway Acres" neighborhood kids.  The neighborhood was full of children and the Baptiste home was a central spot for playing and hanging out.

Chris was a loving mother; she was proud of her children and worked tirelessly to provide a home while attending nursing school.  She enjoyed taking her children to the beach every year and attended countless school and sporting events.  Chris was delighted when she became “Grammy” to her nine grandchildren.

Chris, an intuitive, empathetic woman, spent her nursing career at the Walk in/Urgent Care, from the time it had been a 24-hour emergency department and retired from Walk in/ Urgent Care as we know it now. She took pride in knowing she was available to her family, caring for many from the Wilmington community.  Her dedication to her family’s well-being motivated her to obtain her degree in nursing, while working mother’s hours at DeMoulas, achieving her end goal to work at The Family Medical Center.  Her pursuit also gave her solace in knowing if her children were injured when she was at work, they’d be brought straight to her.

Chris was a loving wife, mother, and Grammy.  She will be missed by her family.

Chris was the beloved wife of the late Julio Baptiste and the late Carl Hamilton, devoted mother of Carl Baptiste & his wife Laura of Pittstown, NJ, Michelle Federico & her husband Vincent of Windham, NH, Glenn Baptiste of London, and Judy Baptiste & her wife Maureen Mills of Wilmington, loving “Grammy” of Carl Baptiste, Skylar Mills-Baptiste, Liam Mills-Baptiste, Stacey Federico, Carly Biggio, Joseph Federico, Kelsey Federico, Xander Baptiste, and Andrew Baptiste, Great-Grandmother of Andrew, Charles, and Domenic, dear sister of the late Joseph Weiss.
