Dr. John Stephen Hanekamp

Dr. John S. Hanekamp, age 63, of Wilmington died on January 26, 2023, at Massachusetts General Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Isabel (McMorrow) Hanekamp with whom he shared nearly 17 years of marriage.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Dr. John H. Hanekamp and Maureen (Thesken) Hanekamp, John was loving brother to Dr. Linda-Marie Hanekamp and Stephen M. Hanekamp, brother-in-law to Dr. Daniel Eby and uncle of Daniel Eby, Claire M. Eby, Lucas J. Eby and Celeste A. Eby.

John received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.D. from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He did research at MIT and later at Massachusetts General Hospital and was also a hospitalist at Quincy Hospital.  John completed his career working in the insurance industry at Unicare and later at R1 RCM. The welfare of patients was always John’s first priority, whether he was doing research, practicing medicine or reviewing insurance claims.

A man of many interests, music was John’s most enduring passion. While he played multiple instruments, acoustic guitar was his favorite. He also wrote and arranged music and had a band, John Hanekamp and Friends. He served on the worship team at Grace Chapel in Lexington and played with the Adagio Big Band. John was also a painter working in oils as well as digital media; he exhibited his work in the Ceres Gallery, Portsmouth NH. In addition, he enjoyed golfing and rode a Harley as a member of the Metrowest HOG and Boston HOG. 

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, June 10th at 2:00 p.m.
