Glass, Elvera Obituary

Elvera A. "Vera" (Algeri) Glass, age 85, of Waltham and West Yarmouth, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Elvera, known to her family and friends as Vera was born January 6, 1923, in Waltham, MA, she was the daughter of the late Graziano "George" and Amelia (Biondo) Algeri. Vera grew up in Waltham and attended Waltham High School. She received a Bachelors of Science from Simmons College in Boston, MA in 1944. She later returned to earn her Masters from Simmons College. Vera began her career in Biological Chemistry working at the Monsanto Chemical Company in Everett, MA. She joined the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1947. Vera became a Principal Associate in Biological Chemistry in 1969 and worked at Harvard until her retirement. She published numerous studies in such journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Forensic Sciences and The American Journal of Clinical Pathology.

Vera loved the Cape and spent many months each year in West Yarmouth where she enjoyed time with her family in earlier years and where she had many close and dear friends.

Vera was the beloved wife of the late Parker Glass, dear sister of Clara Appleyard of Seminole, FL, Norma Zettler & her husband Bill of Winchester, MA, Mary Ferri of Bedford, MA, Grace Ingersoll of Fairfax, VA, and the late Carmen Algeri, Vera was the loving aunt of Steve, Chris, John, Alfred, and Michael Ferri, George and William Zettler, Dwight and the late Emmett Ingersoll, Fred and Vera Appleyard and Elaine Appleyard Stulic.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Mass in St. Jude's Church, 147 Main St., Waltham, on Thursday, May 15th, at 10:30 a.m. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Memorial donations in Vera's name may be made to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 1233 20th Street NW, Suite 402, Washington, DC 20036.
