Hopkins, Eldred Obituary

Eldred W. Hopkins, age 84, of Wilmington, died Monday, January 5, 2009, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 12, 1924, in Old Perlican, Newfoundland, Eldred was the son of the late Ruben & Mary Ann (Milley) Hopkins. Eldred grew up in Newfoundland, he came to the United States in 1945, where he worked on a couple of farms in Bridgewater, MA, and he became a U. S. Citizen. He met Elva E. Marshall, they married on February 10, 1951, and celebrated 42 years of marriage before her passing in 1993. Eldred and Elva lived in Everett for several years prior to moving to Wilmington in the late 1950’s, where Eldred built their home with the help of his father-in-law and his brother George.

Prior to retiring, Eldred worked as a machinist at the H. K. Porter Company in Somerville for many years. In his spare time Eldred enjoyed reading, watching the military and history channels, gardening, eating out, and maintaining his house, which he took a great deal of pride in. Eldred also cherished the fact that he had maintained his relationships with his family down east.

Eldred was the beloved husband of the late Elva E. (Marshall) Hopkins, dear brother of the late Grace Edberg, George, Harold, Wilson, and Rachael Hopkins, loving Uncle of Jean Woodbury & her husband Harold of Wilmington and Paul Ed berg of CT, brother-in-law of Flora & Donald Churchill of Wilmington and Jeanne Clarke of NH, Eldred is also survived by his nephews Donald & David Churchill, many great nieces & nephews, and his dear friend Susan Fisher.

Family & friends are invited to attend Eldred’s Funeral Service on Friday, January 9th at 11:00 a.m. in the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington. At Eldred’s request there will be no visiting hours and his burial will be private.

Memorial donations in Eldred’s name may be made to the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA 01887 or VNA Hospice Care, 100 Sylvan Road, Woburn, MA 01801.
