Joan C. (Winn) Newark

September 16, 1936 ~ December 1, 2022 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Obituary

Joan C. Newark (Winn), a longtime resident of Wilmington, passed away on December 1, 2022, after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

Joan Winn was born in Boston on September 16, 1936, to the late John F. and Alice L. (Callahan) Winn. She grew up in Medford and graduated from Matignon High School.
Joan married her late husband, Frank J. Newark, on September 19, 1959. They lived in Burlington following their marriage, before moving to Wilmington in 1972, where they lived for 45 years and were parishioners of St. Thomas - Villanova Church.

Joan worked at MIT for 10 years prior to starting her family. She later worked at Fred C. Church Insurance Company for 23 years, eventually becoming a Licensed Insurance Broker. During their retirement, Frank and Joan enjoyed being snowbirds in Jupiter, Florida, where they had may friends and were avid golfers. In 2017, Frank and Joan moved to Ayer where they resided until July 2022, when they returned to Burlington, Massachusetts.

Joan loved her husband, children, grandchildren, family, friends, the Boston Red Sox, and the Democratic Party. She was devoted to the Winns, especially her five siblings, the late Robert B. Winn, the late Mary R. Claffey, John F. Winn, Jr., Paula R. Loynd, and Elizabeth Kelley, and her nineteen nieces and nephews.

In addition to her siblings, Joan is survived by her children, Suzanne M. Newark (Medfield), Frank J. Newark, Jr., and his wife, Shelly (Westford), Diane M. Newark (Marlboro), and Nancy A. Newark (Medfield); her grandchildren, Liam J. Milne (Medfield) and Caroline and Catherine Newark (Westford), who affectionately called her “Grammie.”

The family would like to thank Joan’s close friends, Julie Bernardin, Judy Curtin, Marlene Doran, Nancy McCarthy, Alice and Bob McElhiney, and Joan White, and her sister-in-law, Rita Newark, for their unwavering support during the past year.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Friday, December 9th, at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington, MA, after which a funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas - Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington, MA at 1:30 p.m. Immediately following, Joan and Frank will be interred together at Calvary Cemetery, 686 Washington Street, Winchester, MA.
