Luongo, “Dixie” Obituary

Carmine J. "Dixie" Luongo, age 84, of Wilmington, died on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, surrounded by his family.

Born on November 15, 1923, in Winchester, MA, Carmine was the son of the late John & Rose (Vesce) Luongo. He was raised in Winchester and graduated from Winchester High School. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1947. Carmine moved to Wilmington in 1953 and started a poultry farm, in 1973 he added vegetables and had a vegetable stand on Wildwood Street in Wilmington where local residents often stopped in for their fresh produce. Carmine also had a huge vegetable and produce farm in Haverhill, MA, better known as "the hill", which employed half of the youngsters in the town of Wilmington. After many years of hard work, Carmine retired at the age of 80, when his health started to decline. Carmine was an active parishioner of St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Wilmington and he was a 100 percent die hard Patriots Fan. Carmine will be remembered for his hard work ethic, his compassion for people, and his devotion to his family. He will be missed greatly.

Carmine was beloved husband of the late Marie R. (Imperato), devoted father of Rose M. Jackson & her husband Lee of Wilmington, loving grandfather of Angela Jackson & her fiancée Charles Broussard, Janelle Jackson and Marisa Jackson all of Wilmington, dear brother of Anthony Luongo of Burlington, Viola Parshley of Maine, and the late Louis Luongo, Louise McCune, Vera Younk, and Carmela Luongo. Carmine is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, September 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Immediately followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 12:00 noon, Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Memorial donations in Carmine's name may be made to St. Thomas Church Outreach Committee 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA 01887.
