February 4, 1943 ~ February 9, 2024 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Maria Cordeiro Obituary

Maria “Belmira” Almeida Pavão Cordeiro, age 81, of North Reading, formerly a long-time resident of Somerville, passed away on February 9, 2024.

Belmira was born on February 4, 1943, in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal; she was the cherished daughter of the late Humberto and Maria de Luz (Sousa) Almeida Pavão.  Belmira was raised and educated in São Miguel with her younger sister, Leonor.

Belmira met her husband, Paulo J. Cordeiro; they were married in 1967.  The following year, Belmira and Paulo welcomed their only daughter, Migui.  The family moved to the United States in 1976 and settled in Somerville, MA.

Belmira started her teaching career at eighteen years old; she had a passion for teaching and enjoyed her students.  She taught for several years in Portugal and after moving to Somerville, Belmira continued her teaching career at Somerville High School for many years.  Following her retirement from teaching, she took a position as an insurance agent.

Belmira and Paulo loved to travel; they took several trips which spanned each continent and returned home to São Miguel each summer to visit family.

Belmira and Paulo were very involved with Saint Anthony’s church in Cambridge, where they sang in the choir, taught Pre Cana classes, and were involved in the bible discussion group.  They were also both members of Luso-American Financial; a foundation involved with preserving Portuguese culture and language in the States.  Belmira served as President of the Luso-American Education Foundation.

In 2004, Belmira and Paulo welcomed their first, and only grandchild, Sofia Skye.  Belmira and Sofia shared an incredible bond; Belmira semi-retired to help care for her grandbaby.  They spent a lot of time together and Belmira taught Sofia valuable life lessons.

In her spare time, Belmira loved to read and crochet.  She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends.  Belmira also belonged to a book club and looked forward to socializing with her fellow book club members.

Belmira, Paulo, and their family shared many wonderful memories until Paulo’s passing in 2015.  Belmira moved to North Reading to be closer to her daughter and began a new life in her own apartment.  She will be remembered as an excellent confidant and an incredibly wise woman.  Belmira made a beautiful impression on everyone she met, and she will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Belmira was the beloved wife of the late Paulo J. Cordeiro, devoted mother of Maggie Almeida & her husband Paul of Wilmington, loving “Avó” of Sofia Skye Almeida, dear sister of Leonor Carreiro & her husband João of São Miguel, sister-in-law of Edith Medeiros and her husband Fel of Woburn, Godmother of Pedro Miguel Carreiro, Catarina Carreiro, João Paulo Carreiro, and Christine Sinopoli.  Belmira is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
