Obituary

Matthew J. Kane, Jr., “Matt”, age 85, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away following a brief illness on November 20, 2022, at Care One Wilmington.

Matt was born on August 14, 1937, in Stoneham, MA; he was the son of the late Matthew J. and Ruth (Kelley) Kane.  Matt was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden Catholic High School, where he enjoyed playing high school football.

Following graduation, Matt went to work for Mass Electric as a Lineman.  He was a dedicated employee, often working in the cold and hot weather. Matt worked in the Union for many years before being promoted to Supervisor.  After many years, Matt retired to enjoy time with his family.

Matt married “the love of his life”, Eleanor “Ellie” (Roach) Kane, on September 9, 1961.  The couple moved to Wilmington in 1967, where they raised their four children, Allie, Dan, Chris, and Ryan.  Matt was a devoted father; he enjoyed spending time with his children.  He served as a Cub Scout Leader and attended numerous sporting and school events.  Matt and Ellie shared many wonderful memories together until her passing just three weeks ago.

Matt was involved in many social groups in Wilmington; in his younger years, he belonged to the Irish American Club.  He also served as the Treasurer and President of the Lions Club for several years.  Matt also belonged to the Knights of Columbus.  He looked forward to the many social gatherings of the Clubs and helped to organize several functions and charitable events.

Matt and Ellie spent a lot of time with their beloved grandchildren; they took them on outings and hosted them at their pool.  Matt enjoyed being a “Papa”.  The Kane house was open to everyone; Matt and Ellie hosted holidays, family parties, and barbecues.  They were incredible hosts, and everyone enjoyed spending time with them.

In his spare time, Matt enjoyed woodworking and working with stained glass.

Matt was a devoted husband, loving Dad, and Papa.  He will be truly missed by his family.

Matt was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. (Roach) Kane, devoted father of the late Allison LoGrasso & her husband Joseph of NH, Daniel Kane & his wife Lori of Wilmington, Christopher Kane & his wife Stephanie of Nashua and Ryan Kane & his wife Sarah of Topsfield, loving “Papa” of Bethany, Nolan, Annabelle, Marissa, Nathan, Joshua, Gwyneth and Skylar, dear brother of Dorothy “Dotty” Stead and Virginia “Ginny” Mondi.  Matt is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
