Michael E. Benullo

April 17, 1940 ~ July 17, 2022 (age 82)

Obituary

Michael E. Benullo, “Mike”, age 82, of Tewksbury, passed away surrounded by his loving family on July 17, 2022.

Mike was born on April 17, 1940, in Canton, MA; he was the son of the late Felix and Ethel (Hogan) Benullo. As he entered his teen years, Mike’s life was lovingly enhanced by the addition of his step-mother, Ida Benullo.

Following graduation from Woburn High School, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Ludwigsburg, Germany.  After being honorably discharged, he returned home and started his career in pipefitters union, Local 537. His hard work and dedication made him well respected within the union, and he rose through the ranks to serve as Business Manager/Financial Secretary-Treasurer. Mike’s strong business sense and people skills were a great asset to 537, where he would go above and beyond to help a fellow union member. He was a 59 Year Life-Member.

Mike lived in Woburn for many years, where he raised his three children, Elaine, Lisa and David.  He was a devoted father, teaching them to work hard, listen to their mother, and laugh as big as he did.

He eventually met the love of his life, Rosemary Ward of Tewksbury, MA. Mike and Rosemary spent 24 years together as the perfect match.  Mike soon became “Dad” and “Papa” to Rosemary’s children and his grandchildren.

Mike was an avid golfer and member of the Long Meadow Golf Club in Tewksbury, MA. During his years on the course, he hit three hole-in-ones. He loved watching sports and could debate politics with the best of them. He gave back to the community by raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Jimmy Fund, the Shriners Burn Center, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, among many others. This work gained him the attention of Boston Mayor Tom Menino, who appointed Mike to the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority Board of Directors. After retirement, he enjoyed his winters in Delray Beach, Florida.

Mike was the beloved life partner of Rosemary Ward, dear brother of Ethel Benullo of Woburn, and devoted father of Elaine Shannon of Woburn, Lisa Benullo-Steinle of Woburn, and David Benullo of Los Angeles, CA. He was loving “Papa” of Laura Katz and her husband Paul, Danny West & his wife Meaghan, Diana Benullo, Sabrina Fonseca & her husband Kyle, Rachel Shannon, Michael Steinle, Mark Steinle, and Cassidy Benullo. “Great-Papa” of Aidan, Ronin, Max, and Desmond. Mike was also a very special Dad to Billy Ward of Oceanside, CA, Kristin Noone, the late Brian Ward & his wife Ranal all of Billerica, and the late Kevin Ward.  Mike was also “Papa Mike” to the 7 Ward grandchildren; Brian, Timmy, Sean, Ryan, Eryn, and Julia and Shayne Noone.  He is survived by his former spouse, Alexandria (McGurl) Benullo of Woburn, MA. The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion Laura Kelly gave in helping tend to Mike in his final years.
